After an inmate murders a prison guard, the guard’s replacement, Lieutenant Miles Bennett is told to bring “the block” back to order. Bennett reluctantly relies on help from the head block worker, inmate Terrance Lewis, to bring peace back to the prison. They form an unlikely friendship, which the warden condemns. Things come to a head at Terrance’s resentencing hearing where Bennett must choose between his job and standing up for an innocent man.
