As rent regulation gains popularity across the country, this film follows the stories of small property owners in New York who struggle to hold onto their family homes. At the center of “Shabbification: The Story of Rent Control” is the story of Bryan and other small property owners whose dreams of providing a better life for their families are made impossible because of the state’s control of their property. As the story unfolds, it reveals the city’s own battle, where vacant apartments and the disincentive for renovations have led to a broader urban decay.
